About The Delicious Black Box

The Delicious Black Box

The Delicious Black Box is an extended list of the most popular web pages from Delicious.com that have appeared on the Delicious home page. The list of popular web pages on Delicious.com changes every 4 to 6 hours. The Delicious Black Box has been capturing the popular sites from delicious.com each day for well over a year. The delicious black box has grown into a huge list of popular sites you can revisit at anytime.

Del.icio.us and social bookmarking

The Delicious Black Box was born out of an obsession and an extreme fascination with social bookmarking. We’re always looking for the most informative, interesting and useful web sites. Way before Delicious was around we were building huge lists of our favorite web sites using other online tools.

When Delicious appeared on the scene, we finally had a place to keep all of our links and access them from anywhere. We could share them with others and easily sort through them using the tagging system.

Our main focus on delicious was the Hotlist. We have found hundreds of great sites there. The Hotlist became a main source for almost all my new links. In order to see all the links that appeared on the Hotlist we kept checking back within the 4 hour update period so we wouldn’t miss anything.

A simple idea

Checking the Hotlist every 4 hours became a real challenge as we didn’t always have the time to keep checking it. If we were out for the night or took a trip somewhere we ended up missing a bunch of cool links.

In our frustration, we came up with an idea for a web site that would capture all the links from the delicious hotlist in one large list. We could check it when we had the time every few days, once a week or whenever we could.

Being something so simple, we figured someone must have already done a site like this. Sure enough there was a site that did exactly that. We started using it immediately and all of a sudden we were able check the Hotlist on our own time. It was a great find, until one day when the site was gone. Poof! Just as quick as we found it, it was gone.

The making of a Black Box

Not looking forward to checking the Hotlist every 4 hours again we decided to make our own site. After a few brainstorming sessions to sort out what we would like to see in our version of The Delicious Black Box we put the whole site together and got it online.

The Delicious Black Box name came from the Black Box found in today’s aircraft that stores and entire flights session. We thought it was a good metaphor for what we were doing plus it sounded cool.

Before we put the Delicious Black Box online we decided to build up a good months worth of links so there was something for everyone. During that first month of testing we it quickly became one of more frequently used sites.

Life with the Delicious Black Box

It was cool having a tool like this once again. We become very dependant on the Delicious Black Box as a key tool in my social bookmarking toolbox. I was also able to see first-hand the level of value the Delicious Black Box could provide for others interested in a dynamic list of top web sites.

We hope you find the Delicious Black Box as useful as we do and add it to your set of social bookmarking tools. As the site grows with new users we’ll be regularly adding new features to enhance and improve the Delicious Black Box. Stay tuned!
